So my parents are looking for a speaker system

I, being the resident Audiophile, try to get them to get something actually good. My mom wants something that won't blow up when she sings karaoke. My dad wants something that sounds good and is cheap (lol not happening. Cheap? Speakers? Yeah right). I want something thatis awesome and sounds mind blowingly good. What is the answer? Well I've partially convinced my dad these beauties are.

Kinja'd!!!

Martin Logan ElectroMotion ESL Electrostatic speakers. These and a good sub and a good center channel speaker. We don't need surround sound (unless my dad wants to fork over more money). For all of this without a receiver, it's about 2600 bucks on Amazon. Pretty pricey, but oh so worth it. My dad doesn't like to listen to me when it comes to just about anything, so I showed him a video review of them and he seemed actually impressed.

Now the thing with Electrostats is that they are witchcraft and that makes them very very hard to blow, so even my mom's singing won't do that. So, my mom would be happy. When my mom is happy, things get bought. When things get bought, I am happy.

(Basically how Electrostatic speakers work is there is a super thin film in between two perforated metal sheets. The film has an electric current running through it which creates the sound by moving it just like a normal cone speaker, but it is very efficient because not all of the film has to be moving at the same time. The sound this creates is absolutely phenomenal, and there is literally nothing better for the price.)

What about building a DIY setup? I'm not up on my home DIY sets, but it is pretty big in the car audio area. I think you could get more for your money, and get to build a cool project. Plus you could do a cool infinite baffle setup for the sub stage.

Well I could, but I would mess up, and my mom would complain.

No better sound for $2600?

Kinja'd!!!

The Alfa Romeo V6 begs to differ.

I'm sure for that price you can buy the engine and enough peripherals and just have it sit and make music all day long, even if you couldn't get a car to put it in.

I doubt it would run for more than 15 minutes. Also, I could be playing that sound all day on those speakers so hah!

I'm waiting for my dad to give me his old Kef C80s that he is not using anymore. They sound delicious.

Mmm old speakers. You are stuck in the late 70s aren't you.

Well my main receiver is a Pioneer SX-650 and I have a reel to reel, equalizer, turntable, 8-track player, and car from the same era. So yes even though I was born in the 90s I'm stuck in the late 70s.

I have a buddy that went 5.1 with the Martin Logan, holy crap its beautiful. Their open sound makes them worth every bit of the complete setups new price of roughly ~$40k...

Now, that price is far outside my budget, but there are all sorts of ES speaker kits to build your own at a very insignificant price. It might make for a great father son DIY project. I hear even the cheapest kits sound really close to even the better brands like ML...

Why not go vintage? Cheaper and sounds better then 10x the stuff in the price range.

JBL L100s....

I love free audio equipment. I have yet to buy a single piece of my setup.

I was thinking the same thing. My parents have a pair my dad bought new in the 70's. They're not in the best of shape cosmetically, but damn do they sound great!

As an audiophile I'm sure you know of audiogon.com
But in case you didn't, there you go. You may be able to find these lightly used there or a consolation set that's just as good; lightly used.

Just expensive (quality) taste I see haha. Best of luck! That site is amazing and you will find some great deals on there. There are also a ton of very helpful people; which will help guide you. I'd propose this same question on the forums there.
